How many kVA do you need?

What is kVA?
kVA stands for kilovolt amps and indicates the so-called apparent power. This is a combination of two elements:

- Voltage (volts)
- Current (amps)

Unlike kVA, kW indicates actual power.

How do you calculate kVA?
To calculate the power of your installation, use the following formula:
P (power) = U (volts) x I (amps) x √3(or 1.73) x Cos Phi

An example: Suppose you have a 3-phase 400-volt motor with a current of 25.18 amps and a cos phi of 0.8.

Then you get:
P = 400V x 25.18A x √3(or 1.73) x 0.8 = ± 14kW

This means you need a generator with an output of about 20 kVA to run this motor efficiently.
